Google Bids - Position Update

You will know that as of a week or so ago, there were
some issues around reporting of Google Bids and we
released 4.34 to address this. This has partially
solved the problem, but Google has changed its
reporting substantially reducing the number of keywords
that it is reporting data on.

This will have the effect in KA of returning a 0 value
when you know full well there is data for the keyword.
Google is returning a server message, basically saying
there is insufficient data for the keyword in question
to publish a bid - we don't actually believe this to
be the case, but what is clear, is that Google is
restricting the data.

This will be the same for all keyword research tools
that publish Google bids, as the point of data retrieval
is the same regardless of which software you are using.
We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation
for any changes, but please understand that if KA is
not retrieving the bids, the fault is not with KA, but
Google witholding the data.

When we were busy developing the charting components for our new
AdWords API management program, I was playing with some chart
overlays of the various AdWords Metrics: Cost per Click, Position
and Click Through Rate. These three metrics form the basis of the
so-called AdWords formula of
Relative Position = Cost Per Click * Click through rate.

I experimented with trying to understand the effect that changing
an ad would have in the overlays, and while changing the ad would
alter each of the variables, looking at them combined actually did
not tell me whether the net result of the change was positive or
negative.

The reason for this is that one element of the formula may be
adversely affected, while an other could be positively affected.
For example, the position and CTR may improve, but the price may
increase. So you have two curves going one way and one curve the other.

These contradictory messages when plotted on a chart over one
another lead to a certain amount of confusion as to whether the
net effect was desirable or not.

What I was looking for was an easy way to assess whether a change
in an ad could result in just one curve that would tell me whether
the overall net result was positive or negative.

So I set about combining these three elements into a formula that
would give a graphical representation in one curve that would tell
me whether changing my ad was overall positive or negative.

Using the logic that:

A higher Ave Pos is positive.
A higher Click-through rate is positive.
A lower Cost per Click is Positive

I combined these elements into: Ave Pos * CPC * (1/CTR)

This value represents now, just one curve, which when plotted
over ad changes in time, will give you an overall impression as
to the effect of changing an ad. This curve I have called the

AdWords Efficiency Indicator (AEI)

Now, the point of this is not the absolute value – but the
trend up or down.

The more efficient the ad, the more it will trend down towards
zero on an overlay chart, the less efficient and it will increase
in value.

But it gives you an immediate visual fix on whether something needs
closer attention and when plotted over Ad change history reveals
instantly whether you should consider having another look at your
Ad performance.

There is a problem that has been affecting some users and
not others, which is why it took a little longer to identify.

Some people have been having problems activating Google Bids
- the issue here is that over the recent week or two,
AdWords has been changing their login meaning some people
can't access bids on their existing login.

This update addresses this problem. We recommend that everyone
does this update regardless of whether they are currently
experiencing a problem or not.

has seen peculiar things happening in KA.

This update corrects the results not showing, which started happening
a couple of days ago - we're now up to 4.23

Update on the Adsense keyword strip-mine project...

I posted last week that we're working on generating some high-pressure paying Google keyword lists...

The Google Adwords Changes Go Live...

Well, just in case you missed it, Google Adwords went live last night with
the awaited changes to keyword states.

I did some experimenting on my Adwords accounts and came across some strange looking anomalies, although my existing keywords seem to have remained fairly stable.

I'm going to lay low and play with it for a couple of days before I draw any conclusions, but one thing I will do is log onto Perry Marshall's teleseminar this evening. They are keen Adwords watchers and may have already got a handle on what's going on - so maybe worth a visit - but it's on shortly so best get over there.

As you will already know, Keywords Analyzer is probably the best tool of all for Google Adwords users. But one thing I've always neglected to talk about is Google Adsense - the flip side of Adwords.

Keywords Analyzer is also great for digging profitable keywords that you can target for Adsense campaigns. In fact, I've seen professional Adsense lists being sold which have obviously been compiled using Keywords Analyzer.

What you are looking for is simply keyword search terms that are in high demand as opposed to an Adwords advertiser looking for keywords that are in low demand - and of course KA tells you this.

But we're going one further.

Shortly, we will be compiling our own lists for Adsense customers. We'll be compiling the top paying keywords, using Google max bid data - not Overture bid prices - so watch this space...

This post follows on from my last post about R/S - A KA user emailed me the following:

"... what I am having trouble with is this last part from your blog entry:

How does one determine if they are "properly optimised", and then what are the steps to take if they aren't? "

What I am referring to is on-page optimisation - or the steps taken on a webpage to optimise for the search engines ( as opposed to off-page optimisation which refers to other matters such as linking strategies )

When reviewing your competitor's html you should be looking for whether that competitor has specifically optimised that page for the keyword.

To do this, first look in the "meta" tags firstly - in the Title and Description, is this keyword - and only this keyword, present?

Then move to the h1,h2,h3 heading tags - does the heading include this keyword?

And then look in the body of the copy - does this keyword appear in the opening sentence of the copy and then used throughout the copy structure? This is referred to as "keyword density" or the proportion of a chosen keyword to overall copy expressed in percentage terms.

Finally, is this keyword used in any links on the page (anchor text) ?

If you look for these things and find that the page is not constructed like this, then the chances are that if you set up your page properly and pay attention to off-page issues like linking, then you can compete for that position.

I deal with this briefly in the Keyword Master's Course, but one of the better books that I have read on the subject is Mike Wong's : "Search Engine Optimization Strategies." If you're looking for a comprehensive understanding of how it all works then I suggest you read it.

We were made aware a couple of days ago of some Google changes that affected the way related terms searching was working, with the result that a few users got in touch and told us they were having problems. What is considered a good R/S?

I get this question a lot - and answered it again just now, so thought I would post it on the blog.

Firstly, what is R/S in Keywords Analyzer?

It's the ratio of Keywords Searched:Number of Websites found on Google. In KA you have the option of using "broad match" for the results in Google and for SEO purposes you should have this on as it will return more accurate competition results.

R/S is used in a similar fashion to Wordtracker's KEI - it's a predictor of where to look for the most productive keywords.

Now the question often asked is what's an ideal number and where to go from there - and this is my answer to a KA user this morning.

R/S - The optimum number really depends on the keyword. But firstly make sure you are looking at R/S with search matched in "quotes" set to on in the settings panel. Use the lowest R/S as your starting point then go to Google and check the sites of the competitors for that keyword that have top search positions. Open their webpage, and go View>Source on the IE Toolbar and check their HTML
to see if they are properly optimised.

Chances are they will not be and then you take it from there.

Keywords Analyzer gets a touch of colour...

Today, Ver 4.07 is released with extra enhancements. Choose
which colour you want to search in. We've added 5 different
colour skins - just go into settings>other and select the colour
of your choice.

We've updated help files and made some technical adjustments to
do with Google IP logging which now runs in the background. You
don't have to set anything anymore and the program checks on
Google automatically.

If you are an existing user, then as usual, you are entitled to this
and all future upgrades free. You will need your registration key from
your current copy to enable access.

The one Adwords resource no serious online marketer should be without...

I've been meaning to comment publically on this resource for some time, as it is without doubt one of the most valuable resources for discovering anything and everything to do with Google Adwords campaigns that I've yet discovered.

I know a thing or two about keyword research and Adwords myself (he said modestly - but I did after all write the Keyword Master's Course). But the collective comments, wisdom and experience of the hundreds of Adwords Professionals in this little corner of the web are a nugget of pure gold.

And something else.

I'm not an affiliate - and I get no reward for recommending them.

So who are they?

It's called Adword Mentor and it is a subscription forum run by Chris Carpenter and Jeremy Wilson. It's well worth it, because the users share genuine insights and experience about their collective experience - and it's always up to date as the forum is a lightning rod for discovering changes at Google.

FindWhat and Espotting Rebrand to become Miva

The new kid on the PPC block has just been unveiled as Miva.com - a combination of FindWhat, Espotting and Comet Systems.

What this means for KA users is that we'll have to do another
update shortly to accommodate Miva and KA will not return the
old FindWhat results in the interim.

Watch this space and we'll let you know when it's done....

OK - That's now fixed as well. Just follow the download link for the
Google Update and it's been incorporated there.

Google Update

You may or may not have noticed strange things going on with Google recently.

It's affected some of our users (thankfully, relatively few) and we've been working on an update to address it. I strongly suggest that you download the update even if you have not had any problems with Google searching.

The update is now ready to go and should solve any current problems, provided of course that Google doesn't change its programming.

Essentially, Keywords Analyzer now makes far fewer calls to get the same information than it did before, so this should mitigate the IP being logged, and if it is, you have an option now to paste in the image code, restoring normal access.

even banning IP's of users querying their data with
automated tools.

Corey Rudl Leaves the Stage...

It was shocking to hear of the passing of Corey
Rudl. He was an inspiration to millions around
the world and was a true pioneer in internet marketing.

Corey Rudl was the first to make it clear that anyone
could be successful in online marketing and provided
the guidance to help them do it.

His passing was far too early, but if there is any consolation,
it is that he achieved more in his short life than the vast majority of us would achieve in ten lifetimes.

My deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.
